  • Google Ignores NOFOLLOW (Maybe)
I've heard that search engines ignore the NOFOLLOW rel command, but recently I found out (as far as I can tell) that this doesn't appear to be the case.
  • Easy Image Preloader with jQuery
This is something that I've been doing for some time now (especially on sliders/carousels/etc.) and strangely don't see it used much except in plugins. Great way to load large images in a more user-friendly way.
  • Google Updates Chrome Frame
I'm a huge proponent of making web sites and applications cross-browser compatible. It's been a trying task, but Chrome Frame has made things a lot simpler.
  • Simple jQuery Expand/Collapse Unordered Lists
Awhile ago I needed a simple expand/collapse list (UL) for a client's site. There are a TON of 'tree' plugins, but nothing simple, so I wrote one.
  • Google Web Fonts
Google is now supplying an API and font directory to give us designers an even simpler way to add (non-websafe) fonts to our websites.
  • Encrypting POST Data with JavaScript
The standard for encrypting data in transmission over the interwebs is obviously SSL (Secure Socket Layer). But what if you want a simple way to encrypt data without the cost of an SSL? Why not encrypt it client-side with JavaScript, pass a key, and decrypt it server-side?
  • Web Based JQuery Plugin Starter Kit
I've built a template for starting jquery plugin projects, but I stumbled across this web-gem this morning and don't think I'll ever use anything else.
  • Web Site Form Protection, Sans CAPTCHA
Spam is a huge problem with web forms, but CAPTCHA's can cause as many problems as they solve. I find myself having to squint, zoom in, and reset CAPTCHA's to figure them out half the time. Here are some methods to protect your web forms without using obfuscated text.
  • Simple MySQL Backup with PHP
Typically a cron job, or database backup routine is the best method for backing up your data, but sometimes it's just easier to backup when needed.
  • Google Chrome Frame jQuery *Plugin*
This "jQuery plugin" allows for simple implementation of the ChromeFrame plugin into your website, will auto-identify the browser and version. You specify the browser version(s) through conditional comments and the install bar at the top of the page will prompt users to install the plug-in
  • Top 5 CSS pet-peeves
Ever worked collaboratively on a project with a fair amount of CSS? How about with someone who can't seem to follow some simple conventions and creates a cluster of mind-numbingly complex code? Here's my personal list of some CSS coding pet-peeves.
  • Web Development on Linux
So, anyone who knows me knows that I made the switch to Linux awhile back and have been extremely happy with it. A lot of the developers I talk to are worried about the transition, but I've managed to work out the kinks, and have majorly increased my productivity.
  • JQuery Font Sizer
A jQuery plugin to allow users to select the font-size of the page, or a region on the page (or website). Includes ability to set the size change amount, as well as a cookie function which will store the setting for a variably set number of days.
  • JQuery List/Icon View Mode Switcher
JQuery script that allows the user to flip between a list-view mode and and "icon"-view mode. Includes a fade transition to ease the effect.
  • PHP Thumbnailer - GIF, JPG, and PNG Support
I've compiled code from many other sources to put together an easy-to-use way to quickly create and present thumbnails of gif, jpg, and png files based on height or width restrictions and with controls for setting the output quality. The function also includes a cache control to prevent the thumbnails from being created more than once as well as the capability to square crop images which is great for galleries.
  • The Guestbook Test
As the economy improves (as I'm told it's doing), we resume hiring in the web field. I've always struggled weeding out good talent until several years ago when I started using the "Guestbook Test".
  • Embed YouTube, Vimeo, etc. into CKEditor
I've been playing with CKEditor since it first came out, and one thing I had been struggling with was finding a plugin to allow users to embed YouTube, Vimeo, and other media code into the editor. Well, I finally just decided to write my own.
  • jQuery Filter Plugin
The jQuery jFilter plugin is a simple method for returning relevant results from a users query of an ordered/unordered list. It also highlights the word or segment to show the user visibly the accuracy of matches and where in the word or phrase the match is made.
